Felicity Jones shines in Stephen Hawking drama

It seems that actress Felicity Jones has found it appealing to portray irrepressible roles on screen. In 2013, Jones gained acclaim for her role as the illicit love of Charles Dickens in The Invisible Woman. This year, she's portraying another significant character, as the loyal, unwavering wife of theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking in the biopic Theory of Everything.

Hawking is the iconic scientist whose milestone discoveries were achieved while enduring the debilitating condition of Amyotropic Lateral Schlerosis (ALS).

Hawking is played by Eddie Redmayne.

But the film did not just highlight the life and resilience of Hawking, it also showcased the longevity of their marriage, thanks to Jane Wilde Hawking's deep strength.

After all, Director James Marsh revealed that the story is set in Jane's point of view, the adaptation of her memoir, Traveling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen.

"So her performance has to be the equal of Eddie's technically (and) emotionally," Marsh said.

Jones also said that Jane's strength of character, her refusal to be relegated to a mere support to her husband, is the main reason why she accepted the script.

"The film explores this woman not only being a caregiver and a mother, but also having her own academic identity, her own career desires, yet at the same time having a sexual identity. And I felt like there was something revolutionary in this," she explained.

"It was one of those projects where you really take it home with you, and you become those characters," 31-year-old Jones said.

"I was just in awe of how this couple adapted."

Bets are already on that Jones' strong performance in this movie could lead her to her first Oscar nomination.
