Underwater Assault Caught On Video In Hawaii

Hawaii authorities are investigating an incident caught on video where a scuba diver was seen assaulting another diver who was recording fishing activities at a reef 50 feet underwater.

Diver Rene Umberger, a member of Snorkel Bob Foundation, was said to filming an underwater reef on May 8 for a report on fish replenishment areas when she caught on camera two other divers who she presumed were catching fish which will be placed in aquariums.

Reports say one of the divers swam to the direction of Umberger and forcefully tore out the regulator from her mouth, making it hard for her to breathe.

Umberger said she managed to get her broken regulator back in place and slowly swam back ashore after the encounter.

In an interview with KITV station, Umberger said she only realized that somebody tried to kill her underwater after she reached their boat.

Director Joan Lloyd of Snorkel Bob Foundation told the media that Umberger could have died in the incident if she was not an experienced diver.

According to the Hawaiian police, the case will be placed under the jurisdiction of the state's Department of Land and Natural Resources since it happened in the water.

The DLRN said they are currently reviewing the video, but could not comment on the progress of the investigation just yet.

The Snorkel Bob Foundation advocates against massive harvesting of certain fish species from the Hawaiian reefs.
