The question on many a techies' minds is just how many Surface mini tablet versions Microsoft will unveil at its invitation-only event in New York City on May 20.

Right now, the smart money is on two. But recent media reports speculate that three might be the magic number.

Analysts believe the reason for Microsoft likely unleashing a "Gang of Three Tablets" will be to attack the expensive Apple iPad at multiple pricing levels. Having three widely priced Surface tablets won't only beat-up on the iPad. It will also prevent Google's Android operating system from completely dominating the tablet market.

Hints coming from "people who asked not to be identified" saying that Microsoft would be releasing "other new Surface models" is making the Gang of Three scenario all the more believable.

While the exact number of new Surface tablets set to be unleashed is unclear, what is clear is that Microsoft seems hell bent on building an army of tablets that compete directly against the iPad Air, iPad Mini and cheap Chromebook laptops run by the Chrome OS.

One of the new Surface mini tablets will reportedly include a processor made by Intel while the other will run on an ARM processor. An Intel-powered Surface will enable Microsoft to price the device competitively against other mid-range to low-end tablets.

What the rumor mill seems to agree on is that the upcoming Surface models will be 7 to 8 inch and will be powered by a Qualcomm processor and Windows RT. The Surface mini will most likely have a stylus pen and could work with Microsoft's OneNote software.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, however, seems to favor the smaller version, following the path of his rivals. It's obvious he intends to attract people who love iPad mini and Nexus 7.
