Miss Honduras And Sister Murdered Out Of Jealousy

Days after their disappearance, Miss Honduras and her sister Sofia Trinidad had been found dead near a river where Sofia's boyfriend had buried the bodies after killing the two women.

Nineteen-year-old Maria Jose Alvarado and 23-year-old sister Trinidad had disappeared hours before Alvarado's flight to London for her competition.

Sofia's boyfriend Plutarco Ruiz admitted to killing the two sisters. He pulled out the gun out of jealousy after seeing his girlfriend dance with another man. Ruiz and accomplice Aris Maldonado buried the bodies in a remote area near a river.

The sisters were last seen leaving his birthday party before they disappeared. Four people were investigated including Ruiz and the owner of the spa where the party was held.

According to her Miss World profile, Alvarado had aspired to be a diplomat for her country. Prior to becoming a beauty queen, she had a modeling career and participated in a local show.

Maria was crowned Miss World of Honduras on April 26 in San Pedro Sula, where she beat eighteen contestants. Maria was among the youngest delegates of the international competition, which is also known for its humanitarian causes and contributions to charity.

Julia Morley, the Chairman of Miss World Organisation, stated that a special service will be held on Sunday to honor the lives of the sisters.The Miss World competition is the oldest surviving international pageant in the world.

Honduras will no longer participate in the pageant this year because of the tragic incident. With a murder rate of 169 per 100,000 people, it is the most dangerous country in the world.San Pedro Sula, the second largest city in the country, is known as the 'murder capital' of the world.

UN Special Rapporteur Rashida Manjoo once noted that that violent deaths of Honduras women increased by 263.4 percent between 2005 and 2013. Victims are mostly young women living in urban areas.
