The National Football League (NFL) decided on Thursday to move the Sunday Bills-Jets game to Detroit because the New York blizzard dumped six feet of snow in the Buffalo area.

Besides the change of venue from the Ralph Wilson Stadium to Ford Field, the day has also been changed to Monday at 7 p.m.

The Ford Field is free and available on Sunday, but NFL opted to hold it a day after the original schedule to give the Buffalo Bills time to practice, which they could not do this week. They could use on Friday and the weekend the Lions practice center.

Since Tuesday, the Bills could not practice because of the ban on driving in and around Orange Park where its facility is situated. As a result, some Bills who were trapped in their homes tweeted to vent their frustration over the unexpected early snow storm that New Yorkers now refer to as "Snowvember."

Duke Williams said he is running out of food, while Aaron Williams was asking his Twitter friends if he could borrow their snowmobile so he could buy some groceries at Walmart.

NFL would provide later ticket details and other information about the football match.

According to Buffalo News, the other places considered by the NFL were Pittsburg or Toronto. But it ditched the idea of playing in the Canadian city because of passport requirements.

Other parts of New York were buried under up to 10 feet of snow as the storm caused the death of at least 10 people and thousands trapped inside their homes. Ralph Wilson Stadium received over 220,000 tons of snow that the Bills, who are 5-5, are said to consider offering money as well as future tickets to football fans who would help shovel the snow out of the game venue, according to Al.com.

In a statement, NFL spokesman Michael Signora said the important thing for the league is that "all available public safety resources" are free for community use during such as period of difficulty rather than hold the game in Buffalo.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, in a news conference on Thursday morning, also said that it is impractical to have the games now because it could place people's lives in danger.

Jets coach Rex Ryan agrees with the NFL decision.

"It is clear that the most important thing is the safety of the people in the Buffalo area, and we certainly understand that," the New York Times quoted Ryan as saying.

The blizzard also caused the NHL to indefinitely postpone the game between the Sabres and the Rangers slated for Friday night
