Tim Howard Wins US Soccer Male Athlete Of The Year Award for Second Time

U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard

Tim Howard, goalie for the American soccer team, was just named the United States' Soccer Male Athlete of the year for the second time in his career.

The achievement comes five months after Howard captivated the soccer polls with his amazing and record-setting performance in the World Cup. The award stands as a milestone for Howard's efforts of being the anchor for his team to reach the Knockout Round in Brazil.

Howard started all four games this past summer, but had the most notable performance against Belgium.

Even though the US had lost in extra time (2-1), Howard was still named the Man of the Match, as he made 15 saves throughout the game.

That time marked the most saves of any player in the World Cup since they began keeping tabs in 1966.

The first time he won the award was six years ago, in 2008, where he received 64 percent of all votes cast. He beat out midfielders Jermaine Jones (coming in with 19 percent) and Kyle Beckerman (11 percent) in this year's polls.

In an interview with ESPN's Sports Center, Howard said that it is an honor and that it is a special thing to have his name up there with other greats who have come before him.

"The whole ride with the team for about a month and a half, when we got together for training camp and we flew down to Brazil, we had a really good time and that made 2014 so special to me," said Howard.

Howard has also become the US' all-time leader in career wins with 55, breaking Kasey Keller's record of 53. He also holds the record for most goalkeeper appearances with 104, breaking Keller's previous record of 102.

The goalie from US joins other great players such as Marcelo Balboa, fellow goalkeeper Keller, Landon Donovan, and Clint Dempsey as the players to win Male Athlete of the Year on multiple occasions.
