The hotel owner said the construction firm they hired to fix the roof had left construction materials piled on it. The pole was suspected to have been blown by the wind causing it to fall.  The police are still investigating the incident.

An eye witness said that the he saw a young man lying flat on the ground with a metal pole, about one meter in length, sticking out from his head. He also said that the wind caused the pole to fall.

Another witness said that the man was suddenly hit and fell unconscious with blood spilling on the ground.

An ambulance arrived immediately and the victim was rushed to the Peking Union Medical College Hospital.

Based on doctors' initial findings, the man was at risk of incurring cerebral hemorrhage. This prevented the medical team from immediately removing the pole, which they said was 5 centimeters deep into the man's head.

The man and another person were distributing flyers few seconds before the incident occurred.

The hotel staff rushed to call the police after the incident and cordoned off the scene. Firefighters were also called to help remove the pole protruding from the head of the man. They also had a difficult time removing it as it was so long that they had to make use of hydraulic wrench.

As there are a number of companies sharing the building, the issue of who is responsible for the incident and who is to give necessary compensations is deemed complicated.
