The largest creature yet known to have walked the Earth was as tall as a seven-storey building, weighed an astonishing 77 metric tonnes and roamed the Patagonian plains of Argentina 100 million years ago.

Argentine palaeontologists announced the discovery of this most massive dinosaur of all, which hasn't been given a name as of yet. They said the creature belongs to the "titanosaur" family of dinosaurs. This prehistoric creature isn't exactly Godzilla but it could have been just as terrifying a sight to behold.

Palaeontologists excavating the site in the desert near La Flecha, some 135 miles west of the Patagonian town of Trelew, have so far recovered some 150 bones from seven of these dinosaurs. They said the bones are in "remarkable condition."

The height of the thigh bones is taller than an average man and one scientist had himself photographed beside one of these mammoth bones to prove it. Based on the size of the thigh bones and other bones, the dinosaur might have been 130 feet long and 65 feet tall and would probably have weighed 77 metric tonnes, said the scientists.

The palaeontologists said the size of the bones surpass any of the previously known dinosaurs and led them to conclude the new dinosaur is the largest animal known to have walked on Earth.

Palaeontologists believe the find could be a new species of titanosaur, which they described as a gigantic herbivore, or plant eate, of the long-necked sauropod group that lived in the Late Cretaceous period.

The bones were discovered a year ago and were excavated last week by a team of palaeontologists from Argentina's Museum of Palaeontology Egidio Feruglio in Trelew. The team is headed by Dr. Jose Luis Carballido and Dr. Diego Pol.

The scientists said the new dinosaur will be given a name describing its magnificence as well as in honor of the region and the farm owners who alerted them about the discovery.
