Senator Chuck Schumer (D - New York) delivered a speech on Tuesday at the National Press Club and said while Democrats advocate the government's role in making people's lives better, he admitted that his party should not have pursued the health care reform.

The senator pressed that it was a mistake for United States President Barack Obama's administration to take on the issue during his first term. Critics countered that Schumer's argument goes against the core value of the Democratic Party and liberalism in general.

Schumer noted that instead of tackling the reform health care, the Democrats should have spent more time in lifting the middle class. Unfortunately, his party blew the opportunity that the Americans gave them and took on the wrong problem.

The Democratic senator also added that a lot of Americans are uninsured and are suffering from unfair insurance company practices that need to be addressed. However, he said the Affordable Care Act was not the necessary change that the Dems should have implemented.

Americans were actually asking for help amidst the recession and want to have better paying jobs and more opportunities and they did not at all want to have changes regarding the health care system, according to Schumer.

He added that 85 percent of the Americans got their health care benefits from the government or from their employer but not the ObamaCare.

ObamaCare was aimed at almost 36 million Americans who were not covered by any health insurance. However, only a third of the said number are registered to vote, making it more difficult to let them sign up for the Affordable Care Act.

The New York politician also talked about how the middle class feel they are not given enough attention because of the health care reform. The middle class should have been the priority so they would be more receptive to the idea that Obama is willing to help them, he explained.

Chuck Schumer added that Obama might have made a more pro-government coalition and that should have been the time that his regime tackled the health care crisis.
