The boom in smartphones and e-gadgets with cameras birthed the selfie and has given plastic surgery an incredible boost.

Let's face it, the selfie era made people more aware about their looks. Selfies remain all the rage in social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram as young adults keep posting endless images of themselves. Looking selfie pretty is a must these days.

Dental hygienist Jennifer Reynolds from Costa Rica underwent plastic surgery on her nose to enhance her image when taking selfies.

"I definitely feel more comfortable right now with my looks. If I need to take a selfie, without a doubt, I would have no problem," Reynolds explained.

The emerging selfie economy made other people hire specialized make-up artists to make them feel more comfortable with their looks.

Plastic surgeons in United States have seen an increased demand for procedures ranging from eye-lid lifts to rhinoplasties, also known as nose jobs, from patients seeking to improve their image in selfies.

A recent poll among 2,700 members of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) showed that one in three had seen an increase in requests for procedures because patients were more aware of their image in social media.

AAFPRS said there's been a 10 percent increase in rhinoplasty procedures in 2013 compared to 2012; a seven percent jump in hair transplants and a  six percent rise in eyelid surgeries.

"There has been a 25 percent increase over the past year and a half to two years. That is very significant," said Dr. Sam Rizk, a plastic surgeon from Manhattan.

He added some patients show him their iPhones with their selfies and he thinks the selfie craze is getting crazier.
