An American Airlines jet from Barcelona made an emergency landing at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on Sunday noon because of a bomb threat. The 200 passengers and 9 crew members from Flight 67 were evacuated, but after two hours of search by four sniffing dogs, no bomb was found.

The passengers were ordered to get their luggage and leave the aircraft immediately. But they had to wait for 30 minutes on the tarmac before a van picked them up and they were informed of an unspecified threat as the reason behind the evacuation.

They were met by a Port Authority van which transported them to a gate, but they remained inside the van. The K-9 were brought inside the evacuated plane to check the Boeing 767 which was towed to a remote hangar and surrounded by several emergency response vehicles.

There was not much information about the threat, except that it was received through a phone call by a Port Authority worker. One passenger named Beth Henderson tweeted that there was "a big wave of confusion" since nobody knew what was happening.

"Nobody knew what was going on. There was a gnawing worry in the pit of my stomach," ABC quotes Henderson from Brooklyn, New York.

After the dogs did not find any bombs inside the plane, the K-9 then searched every piece of luggage stored inside the jet's belly.

When it was confirmed that there were no bombs, American Airlines said sorry to its passengers. It said in a statement, "American Airlines apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused, however, the safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority."

Joe Pentangelo of the Port Authority of New York said that authorities are investigating where the call came from.
