A sophomore student from Oakland University died Wednesday because of an extreme allergic reaction to peanuts.

Chandler Swink, 19, was in a coma at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan since November 18 after he ate peanut butter at a friend's house. According to the doctors, Swink only had a two percent chance of survival when he was admitted.

The nursing student appeared to be healthy and normal, but he's been suffering from a level six peanut allergy reaction since he was two years old. He wasn't allowed to eat any type of peanut or its by-products.

Nancy Swink, the teen's mom, said somebody baked peanut butter cookies at the apartment of her son's friend.

He might have eaten the food or someone contaminated with peanuts might have touched him and residues from the peanuts could have been transferred to him.

As a nursing student, he immediately injected an EPiPen as the reaction started to take effect. He drove himself to the hospital afterwards, but he never made it to the emergency room as he lost consciousness. He was found on the driver's seat.

Before doctors pronounced his death, Swink didn't have any brain activity and was hooked to an oxygen machine. Couple Bill and Nancy Swink decided to take away their son's life support on November 26.

His cause of death is believed to be anaphylactic shock that led to cardiac arrest and an asthma attack.

Swink's mother is hoping people will now understand that some food allergies can be life threatening.

She said his school in Avondale went peanut butter free for his safety. It received some criticisms from parents and students and they even commented that peanut allergy didn't seem to be that serious.

The father said people should take food allergies seriously, most especially when the holiday season comes around.
