The 5th Annual Core4 STEM Expo is designed to inspire students who have the potential or are dreaming of becoming scientists, engineers or mathematicians. It seeks to excite kids about careers in science and technology.

The 1,700 female middle school students that attended the expo learned more about STEM and listened to Shayla Rivera, a rocket scientist, make the case for a career in science and technology.

"We're planting seeds today and getting these girls to believe that they can, because they can," Rivera said.

The rocket scientist pointed out Latina women "are the number one group in this country opening new businesses and making a change."

The event also provided the participants and attendees with the opportunity for hands-on programs, which made them all the more excited.
