Police said the victims were brought to the nearby Lakeland-Niles Hospital and Memorial Hospital in South Bend. Two of the victims were undergoing surgery, said Niles Mayor Michael McCauslin, but none of their wounds were fatal. One of the four seriously injured victims is a woman.

Jim Millen, chief of the Niles Police Department, said their dispatch center received a call at around 7 p.m. from the Amtrak center in Chicago that there is an individual on board who was "acting a little odd" and had assaulted four people, including the train conductor.

When the police boarded Train #364, which had 172 passengers, at the Niles Station, the man threatened the cops with a knife, so they Tasered the man and handcuffed him.

Even if the police had taken the man in their custody, the train was not allowed to leave yet. Passengers on the coach where the stabbing occurred were questioned and the coach was searched for evidence. Those in the other coaches were ordered to stay inside and wait while investigation is ongoing.

Passengers were informed that the train would resume it journey to Port Huron before midnight.

Niles is located about 10 miles north of South Bend, Indiana.

One of the passengers shared that while waiting for the investigation, the Salvation Army provided them with hot cocoa, the Niles police brought pizza and bottled water. By 11:20 p.m., the passengers were advised that the delayed train was due to leave any minute, the passenger added.
