'The Daily Show' Takes a Shot at China's Pun Ban

Jokesters in China be warned, you have nowhere to pun -- except on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

After China's state media watchdog agency came out with a warning against wordplay in broadcasts and advertisements, Stewart had a field day on his show making fun of the ban on puns.

"The great chairman says from now on all meanings must be literal and all entendre must be single -- single I say -- there will be no puns," Stewart quipped, before an icon with the text "Chinese Zinger Trap" flashed on screen.

"That is a pun (referring to the icon text) do you hear me? We don't want to offend our Chinese overlords," the comedian said.

He went through several icon texts reading "The Great LOL of China" and "Attila the Pun" before settling on a Chinese flag with the caption, "A Measured Discussion of the Prohibition of Wordplay in the People's Republic of China."

He then dug his claws into how "miners" instead of minors may misunderstand the ban and went into a tirade about "Puns of Anarchy."

"Perhaps their government truly fears that their country risks being overrun by a scourge of 'peeking' ducks or 'coy' ponds or green 'T', but China consider for a moment what you might be losing," Stewart said.

"The pun is a rich literary tradition -- one embraced, honed and perfected by the likes of Shakespeare, John Donne and James Joyce. The pun is a linguistic dance... in the space where sounds meets meaning especially eleagant in languages as subtle and complex as Chinese where a simple adjustment in tone can upend the entire essence of a phrase," he added.

China's State Administration for Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television announced that the use of puns and wordplay should be prohibited from broadcasts and ads in China, or that the country could otherwise face "cultural and linguistic chaos."

This is because they are "contradictory in spirit to the promotion of excellent, traditional Chinese culture", and could create public misunderstandings, especially among children.
