Jim Ross: On Why UFC Signing CM Punk Is A No-brainer

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White dropped a bomb during the UFC 181: Hendricks vs. Lawler card, announcing that they have signed former professional wrestler Philip Jack Brooks, better known as CM Punk. Announcer Jim Ross thinks UFC's move is a no-brainer.
While most mixed martial artists are on the fence about signing someone with no professional fights or experiences at all while others have to work hard to get their shot in the big leagues, Ross sees the value in the move.

In Ross' recent article, he explained why signing former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) superstar Brooks was a great move. He says it is "another testament to the brilliant promotional strategist White.
He explains that signing Brooks is a no-lose situation for the UFC.
In entering the world's largest mixed martial arts (MMA) organization, he brings with him his immense name identity made famous by the WWE.
"When one's former company -- WWE -- is in more than 150 countries in multiple languages, then one of their top and most popular stars is going to be known around the world, which makes Punk a highly marketable fighter -- at worst, one time," Ross says.
He continues by surmising that Brooks, who has been a long-time aficionado of MMA and has trained in Muay Thai and in Gracie Jiu-jitsu, will have his training documented on FOX TV and across all the platforms of the UFC.
Fans will also find an emotional connection in the Chicago native whose professional wrestling struggles alone have already garnered him a number of appreciators.
Ross also recalled several conversations that he has had with Brooks and says he is very passionate about MMA. He likens it to borderline obsessive.
While several elements point to why signing Brooks is good for the UFC ratings-wise, there is still the question of whether or not he can actually win a fight in the octagon.
As Ross says, he is a marked man because no one wants to be known as the guy who lost to an ex-professional wrestler.
However, he continues by saying that even if he doesn't win a single UFC fight, "the signing of Punk by White is that of a brilliant promoter who can create a journey that both the fans of Punk -- and those who aren't -- can travel and one in which they can both emotionally invest."
