The pregnant Sudanese woman, Meriam Yehya Ibrahim, confronted by death penalty and 100 lashes after being charged with apostasy and adultery has successfully delivered a baby girl in jail on Monday.

The 27 year old Ibrahim gave birth to her daughter in a Khartoum jail, according to her lawyers' statement on Tuesday. However, sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity told CNN that her husband was not allowed to be present as she was giving birth.

Ibrahim was charged after refusing to renounce her Christianity about two weeks ago. She was already eight months pregnant at that time when the case was filed against her.

A Sudanese lawyer petitioned to reverse the verdict ruled by the lower court last week.

Ibrahim's lawyer Mohamed Jar Elnabi, said that she is currently with her 20 month old son in prison.

Meanwhile, the boy was free to go out from jail any time. Her lawyer also said that Ibrahim's husband, Daniel Wani is a US citizen who has a wheelchair and has been dependent on her for most of his life.

The lawyer for the accused also said that the appeals in a Khartoum court will issue a ruling regarding the apostasy case by next week. It will first request the lower court to submit the records it used as basis for its earlier ruling.

Ibrahim was charged with apostasy after failing to renounce her Christian faith on May 15. She said that her father was a Sudanese Muslim while her mother was an Ethiopian Orthodox.

Ibrahim also added that her father left them when she was 6 and was then raised in a Christian home.

Meanwhile Sudanese Parliament speaker Fatih Izz Al-Deen said that Ibrahim's claims to be raised in a Christian home was untrue after her Muslim brother filed a complaint saying Ibrahim was raised in an Islamic environment.

Ibrahim's lawyer said that the complaint filed against her alleged that she went missing for several years and that her family was shocked after finding out she married a Christian.

The courts considered Ibrahim a Muslim after her father making her marriage to a Christian invalid.

Apart from the death sentence, Ibrahim was also convicted with adultery after marrying a non-Muslim and then sentenced her to 100 lashes. However, the Parliament speakers said that the verdict is not yet final and would still undergo all judicial stages until it reaches the constitutional court.

The verdict of Ibrahim's case was condemned by human rights activists and foreign embassies around the world.

Christian Solidarity Worldwide spokeswoman Kiri Kankhwende said that the Sudanese government imposed sentences to pregnant and nursing mothers after their children had been weaned.

African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies' Katherine Perks said that the sentence for Ibrahim's case is against Sudan's own constitution.

Furthermore, Perks said that it is also against the commitment Sudan has signed under regional and international law.

Foreign embassies including Canada, UK and the United States in Khartoum urged the Sudanese government to reverse its action.
