According to research, there are about 35 million individuals who are suffering from Alzheimer's disease, and experts believe that this will continue to increase by 2050.

However, the good news is that researchers, scientists, and medical experts are working hard in finding possible treatment options for the said illness - and they may have recently found a new kind of approach that can possibly treat the disease.

According to Science Daily, a psoriasis drug has the potential of treating the Alzheimer's disease. A group of researchers working at the University of Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), specifically under the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, has stumbled upon the possibility of a medication used in treating patients suffering from the dermal disorder to be helpful for Alzheimer's patients.

The leaders of the research group, Professor Falk Fahrenholz and Dr. Kristina Endres, used the available information about secretase, a certain type of enzyme believed to play a role in the development of Alzheimer's disease.

They then utilized the data recorded about the psoriasis drug, which contains ADAM10, a form of alpha-secretase that competes with beta-secretase.

Together with Professor Andreas Fellgiebel and Professor Klaus Lieb, Medical Express cited that the group has tested their theories through the oral administration of the drug in several Alzheimer's patients.

The results showed that the APPs-alpha, found in the patient's spinal fluid, has increased. According to the researchers, this may be interpreted as an ADAM10 activity stimulation, which may then lead to a decrease in the build-up of Alzheimer's plaques.

In addition, it is also worthy to note that the scientists have reported the drug to have been tolerated well by the Alzheimer's patients.
