Afghan Woman Shocks Kabul By Displaying Bare Legs

(Photo : Reuters) A garbage collector takes a nap on his tricycle, as he waits for people to sell abandoned items to him, in downtown Beijing May 26, 2014. On the outskirts of Beijing lies Dongxiaokou village, a major centre for recycling old electronic goods, or e-waste. Discarded electrical and electronic products, from abandoned air-conditioners to refrigerators, are collected and recycled mostly by migrant workers who either repair them or sell them on as scrap. Those in the business in Dongxiaokou grapple with poor infrastructure and sanitation facilities, in addition to dangers associated with handling e-waste. The village is now facing demolition to make way for an ambitious urbanisation plan, and residents are worried about losing their homes and work. A female wearing a short skirt to display her shapely legs is a common sight in western cities such as New York, Paris or Milan. At best, she would likely get stares or wolf whistles in appreciation of her nice body physique.

If she did that in India, she would likely be raped and in Baghdad, perhaps be beheaded by the Islamic State. In Kabul, Afghanistan, one woman dared show her legs - although she was not wearing a micro-mini skirt or shorts - but a mid-length red dress with uneven hem and paired with purple shoes.

That woman created a social media pandemonium as her photo became viral on the internet. People in and out of the predominantly Muslim country are talking about her display of skin.

She can thank or blame Hayat Ensafi, a local journalist, for all the attention that unidentified woman is getting because he took her photo and posted it on Facebook. And the rest is history because the photo has become viral.

"I was shocked. I know I had to catch this special moment because I never saw a woman here walking down the streets like this," Ensafi told BBC.

He attempted to strike a conversation with the woman, but she was walking briskly and didn't replied back, Ensafi said.

Kabul is shocked and Afghans are debating if she is mentally sick or doing a one-woman protest.

Other Afghans are worried that her act could cause the ruling Taliban to be stricter on women who are now mandated to wear the burqa, unlike during the 1960s and 1970s when they could wear skirts, although they still had to wear veils then.

Some Afghans compared what she did with reality star Kim Kardashian who posed naked for Paper Magazine in November, showing her voluptuous behind. Kim's public display of her rear assets is said to have broken the internet, while the unknown woman's bare legs is threatening to do that same, at least in Kabul or Afghanistan.
