A 67-year-old fisherman named Ron Ingram was trapped off the Hawaiian coast for 12 days before being rescued by the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard had been looking for him for days since he was reported missing, and on December 1st they gave up the search thinking there was no hope in finding him.

Then on December 9 at 7:55 in the morning the Coast Guard got a mayday call from Ingram saying he is still alive and is stuck in the middle of the sea alone.

Hawaii News Now said that the Coast Guard was shocked to get that call saying there is a mayday alert over the other line - the man was asking if anyone is around to hear him.

Ingram is from Molokai and he was on his way to Lanai during Thanksgiving when his boat started to take on water inside. He already needed help when his boat has gone 80 kilometers west of Kailua-Kona. But unfortunately, the Coast Guard didn't find any signs of him when they reached 31,000 square kilometers of that area.

He was found about 100 kilometers south of Honolulu on December 11 by Navy Destroyer USS Paul Hamilton. Ingram was hungry and suffering from dehydration when they finally located him.

His family is very happy to have witnessed a miracle right before Christmas. His son Zakary Ingram said that his father is definitely a champ for surviving 12 days in the middle of the ocean.

Ingram told the rescuers that he kept trying every day to find a signal and someone who would pick up, but he was unable to get any luck until that day when he finally had the chance to get a signal. He said that he just really didn't give up.
