Nintendo's Wii U Sees Surge in Sales After 'Super Smash Bros.' Release

Sony's PlayStation and Microsoft's Xbox dominate the gaming console industry, but Nintendo's Wii U recently made a surge in sales thanks in large part due to the release of "Super Smash Bros."

The Japanese gaming company announced that its Wii U received its best sales week in the U.S since the console was launched in 2012.

The latest installment of "Super Smash Bros." was released for the Wii U in the U.S. on Nov. 21 and released in Japan Dec. 6, and has sold more than 700,000 copies so far. Most of the success seems to come from Japan, as nearly 230,000 copies were sold within a two-day time span following the launch last week.

The successful launch of "Super Smash Bros." in Japan has also led to a surge in Wii U console sales. Nintendo sold more than 24,000 units this week, doubling the amount of consoles sold the previous week.

Although the sales numbers pale in comparison to the 2008 launch of "Super Smash Bros. Brawl," which sold 1.4 million copies in its first week, Nintendo appears to be pleased with the Wii U surge.

"This is a ringing endorsement from families and fans that Nintendo has the best variety, the best value and the best gaming experiences for sale this holiday season," said Nintendo of America marketing executive Scott Moffitt.

Nintendo's hand-held 3DS console also had a good week with the launch of "Super Smash Bros" in addition to the launches of "Derby Stallion Gold," "Aikatsu," and "Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3" leading to the sales of more than 140,000 units.

"We're extremely confident in our holiday proposition and look forward to closing this year strong and starting 2015 with a full head of steam," Moffit added.

Meanwhile, the PS Vita, Xbox 360 and Xbox One are the only consoles to receive a slight decrease in sales.
