India Invites Samsung, LG to Set Up Manufacturing Facilities

The Indian government recently announced it's invited major South Korean tech companies, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, Inc., to set up new manufacturing facilities in India.

Ravi Shankar Prasad, the minister of communications and information technology, said the manufacturing facilities will be part of India's "Make in India" program.

"We are promoting all the big guns like Samsung and LG to come to India in a big way under 'Make in India' programme," said Prasad at the golden jubilee celebrations of the Computer Society of India.

"Come to India, establish premises, use human resources, technology and talent of young people to make in India for India and also for exports,"

Prasad said the Indian government hopes to establish 20 manufacturing clusters. He said states will benefit financially if they provide 50 acres of land for the clusters.

India has been focusing heavily on transforming the country into a smart digital nation. Multinational networking giant Cisco Systems, Inc. unveiled its 'Cisco Smart City' in Bangalore last October.

The smart city covers 2.6 million square feet and intends to showcase new concepts and technologies for the 'Internet of Things'.

Chinese information technology company Inspur Group said it hopes to collaborate with the Indian government on its smart city project.

Chinese tech giant Xiaomi, Inc., the world's third largest smartphone maker, will soon start manufacturing its smartphones in India and Brazil.
