"American Idol" to Be Reduced to One Night, Ryan Seacrest Says

The iconic TV show, American Idol, will now be aired only one night a week, Billboard reports.

The show's host, Ryan Seacrest, revealed the new setup at the z100 Jingle Ball in New York, Friday.

"We are going to do the performance show and the results in the same show," Seacrest revealed at the backstage at Madison Square Garden.

Seacrest believes that this would make the show more exciting as fans and audience won't have to "'wait 'til tomorrow night'" before they know who's stays and who goes home.

"We are going to put it all into one format in one night. So that will be exciting," Seacrest added.

The change in programming is close to that of Dancing With the Stars where the results are announced right at the same night after the contestants perform.

"[It will be] one night when we get to the final stage, the top ten, there will be one night of performances and results all in one night," Seacrest said.

Aside from the change in programming, the show's three judges, Keith Urban, Harry Connick, Jr., and Jennifer Lopez, will also be giving contestants more quality time so that, in Seacrest's words, they could have more "chance to get to know them a little bit better."

Seacrest added that the idea of having former Idols join the show to coach the contestants would definitely benefit them.

"Now that we've been on for such a long time, you've got mentors in these Idols and they come back with some real experience to talk about," he said.

It's undeniable, however, that American Idol is now past its prime. The last season the show has held sold No. 1 in the ratings was in 2010-11. The show's audience peaked to 37.7 million on Season 6, although its audience has been in a declining trend since Season 7. For its Season 13, Idol had 15.19 million viewers only, a huge drop from Season 12's 17.93 million.

American Idol will come back for a new season in Fox on Jan. 7.
