Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian and Rihanna were some of the celebrities whose accounts have suffered millions of losses after bosses decided to launch a crackdown on spammers.

"In December 2014, we're fixing an ongoing issue that incorrectly includes inactive or fake accounts in follower/following lists," a statement from the company announced.

Bieber's Instagram handle has suffered the most, losing 3.5 million followers, followed by Ariana losing around 1.5 million. His Instagram followers is now down to 20.3 million.

Reality TV celebrity Kim Kardashian lost 1.3 million while Rihanna has 1.2 million less followers.

Other notable celebrities who lost a significant number of followers include: Beyoncé, who lost around 692,000, and One Direction singer Harry Styles whose Instagram fan base dropped by 784,008.

"We're in the process of fixing an issue that incorrectly includes inactive or fake accounts in follower/following lists. We want to maintain the best possible experience on Instagram, so we do our best to remove spam, fake accounts and other people and posts that don't follow our Community Guidelines. As we remove these accounts, some people may notice a decrease in their follower/following counts," a statement from Instagram's executives read.

Instagram's purge has eventually got the ire of its users.

One Instagram user from Kabul, Afghanistan wrote: "F*** YOU INSTAGRAM HONESTLY F*** U I LOST 50 FOLLOWERS F4F IF YOU DISLIKE ARIANA."

"I lost 150 and the happiness that came with finally reaching 1,000," vented another Instagram account holder out of frustration.

"There's so much chaos going on in this world and you all are freaking out over lost followers? If people would put this much energy into something that actually mattered, this world would be a better place. So pathetic," wrote another.
