Number one seed Rafael "Rafa" Nadal defeats rival second seed Novak Djokovic to take the French Open title for the ninth time in his career, making him the first ever tennis player in history to achieve such a feat.

This would be Nadal's 14th Grand Slam victory, placing him second alongside Pete Sampras with the most titles. Swiss Roger Federer still holds the title with the most Grand Slam crowns which stands at 17.

Spaniard Nadal fought back three straight sets after dropping the first to win the title against Serbian Djokovic under a blistering Parisian sun with a final score of 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 and 6-4 in three hours and thirty-one minutes.

28-year-old Nadal also holds the title of having the most Grand Slam crowns in five consecutive years in the clay courts of Roland Garros.

Rafa's first French Open title was when he was 18 in 2005 and won each year until 2009 when he lost the title to fourth seed Swedish Robin Soderling. He bounced back in 2010 and has one each year up to this year. An outstanding 9 French Open crowns in 10 years.

Djokovic, who won six Grand Slam titles of his own but has been denied the French Open, is now 27 years old. He committed a double fault at match point, similar to that of the 2012 title match, where he lost the game to no other but Nadal.

After the match, Rafa said to the crowd that "In matches like this every moment is crucial. Playing against Novak is always a big challenge as I had lost against him four times. For me it's amazing and emotional, I lost the final at Australia last year where I had a problem with my back and that was a hard moment. Today tennis gave back to me what happened in Australia."
