Lizard Squad Expected to Hit GTA Online, Halo, Call of Duty with DDoS Attacks

Lizard Squad, the hacker group notorious for its distributed denial-of-service attacks, supposedly put an end to attacking gaming companies' networks when it was bribed by MegaUpload founder Kim Dotcom, but that doesn't mean the group won't still hit individual games with attacks.

Lizard Squad sent massive DDoS attacks to crash Xbox Live and PlayStation Network on Christmas, leaving thousands of gamers worldwide unable to connect to the network services. The attack had such a big impact on the networks that PSN reportedly was still experiencing issues as of this morning.

Founder of Hong Kong-based MegaUpload, one of the largest file-sharing sites on the Internet, essentially bribed Lizard Squad by offering the group 3,000 vouchers for its content hosting service in exchange for the group ending its attacks on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.

Each voucher reportedly costs $99, which translates to nearly $300,000 worth of vouchers. Lizard Squad, of course, took the deal and promised to end the attacks on gaming networks. But it didn't make the promise regarding individual games.

Lizard Squad members threatened via Twiter to continue to send DDoS attacks, except that this time it would focus on games.

"Lizard Squad won't take down Xbox Live and PlayStation Network anymore," said a tweet on a Twitter account used by someone called "GDKJordie," who's allegedly the leader of the group. "That doesn't stop me and my friends from hitting games off."

While specific games to be attacked weren't mentioned by the group, it's relatively easy to speculate which games could be targeted.

Many are speculating Lizard Squad to strike the GTA Online server with a DDoS attack once the highly anticipated Heists downloadable content is released for the game. While others are speculating the group to hit the "Halo 5: Guardians" multiplayer beta, which officially launched today.

YubTube's gaming tipster DomisLive mentioned that he believes the group would also target the servers of "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare" and could even hit eSports organization Major League Gaming (MLG).

According to the group, the DDoS attacks on gaming companies started "for the laughs," but later turned into an effort to expose the network issues for Xbox and PlayStation while ultimately forcing Microsoft and Sony to upgrade its security.
