U.S. President Barack Obama apologized on Sunday to an Army couple whose wedding venue was moved at the last minute because the president and his friends were teeing off at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.

Edward Mallue Jr. and Natalie Heimel scheduled their wedding on Sunday. They couple were aware that the Obamas are in the island for their yearend holiday and have rented a house in Kailua, so they even invited him to the nuptials. But the president declined the invitation, although he congratulated them, report Al.com.

A day before the big day, the pair were told to move their wedding venue away from the 16th hole because of the president's golf game. They obliged and held their wedding at the lawn near the residence of the base's commanding officer.

Christie McConnell, the sister of Heimel, said that since the couple are even-tempered and planners, they seemed fine during the nuptials even if the situation stressed them a bit, according to AP.

During the photo session, the newlyweds were surprised to receive a call from their wedding planner who asked their permission if she could give Mallue's number to the president.

When Obama called, the groom placed his phone on speaker setting so all could hear the conversation. McConnell, the bridesmaid, recounts that Obama asked the couple how long they have been dating, talked about golf and apologized for the sudden changes in their plan because of his golf game.

Personal trips of the president are not announced to the public to keep costs minimal and avoid disruption in places that Obama would go to.

McConnell said the newlyweds didn't mind the change of plans and said the president's personal call even made the day more memorable.
