Supreme Court Taking Violent Threats on Facebook More Seriously

Facebook

When Anthony Elonis posted threatening notes to his estranged wife on Facebook, he could never had imagined in his wildest dreams that it would land him in jail. But it did happen so.

The event took place about four years ago when Elonis decided to vent out his anger on Facebook and posted a note to his now-separated wife- "There's one way to love you but a thousand ways to kill you. I'm not going to rest until your body is a mess, soaked in blood and dying from all the little cuts."

The note was read by Elonis's former employer and taking the issue seriously he informed the authorities about it, as stated by Associated Press.

Even the arrival of FBI agents didn't deter Elonis from engaging in such kind of activity and he wrote off another threatening message to his wife on Facebook. Shortly after that he was arrested.

When asked to comment on the whole issue Elonis simply brushed off the accusations saying that it didn't mean anything. He insisted that the messages he write were just rap lyrics. However, despite of his appeals the charges were not dissolved and his case was landed in the Supreme Court, and it will now be heard this fall.

Without doubt Elonis is not the first one to take on social media sites to ventilate frustration and hatred for someone. However, while authorities didn't take these kinds of online threats seriously in the past, their attitudes are now changed. Even Supreme Court which used to avoid such cases has not started to weigh in on such issues.

According to sources, the Supreme Court is reconsidering the plan of action against such kind of cases in future.
