China Communist Party: 'House of Cards' Depicts U.S. Corruption

An article published by the Communist Party Discipline Inspection Commission on the hit Netflix show "House of Cards" suggests that TV dramatizations on the abuse of political power in the U.S. are depictions of real-life political practices in the West.

The corruptions in the developed West are widespread, claims Zhao Lin, the author of the article translated by The Wall Street Journal.

"They are less upright than they boast," suggests the article as it explores the reality behind film dramatizations of political corruption in Western television.

Plots similar to shows like "House of Cards" surprise Chinese audiences as these undermine the integrity of Western systems of government, the author explains.

Chinese netizens are quick to pick up on the article. It stood out from the commission's website whose daily headlines highlight unverifiable claims to expediting the prosecution of corrupt government officials, and the latest tally of reproved officials.

18 months before, the Discipline Inspection Commission which acts as the investigating body for political corruption launched a historic campaign to prosecute corrupt cadres. It is the latest agency to have cited the show for its political corruption content.

Commentators in China are divided in their opinions. The show, for many, provides insight into Western's dirty politics but it nevertheless doesn't justify the country's own corrupt political problems.

"We can only see their corruption via their TV shows but we feel our own corruption in real time every day of our lives," one comment on the article reads.
