Provinces In China Continuously Hit By Heavy Rainstorms, Grade IV Response Alert Issued

(Photo : Reuters) Chinese provinces badly hit by heavy rainstorms.

Chinese authorities have already issued a grade IV response alert in the country on Saturday following heavy rainstorms.

A grade IV response alert is the lowest in the emergency response system in the country. This means that relief goods and cash should be sent to affected areas within 48 hours. The alert response level also means delivering daily damage reports and a 24 hour alert in the provinces across China.

Floods and the heavy downpour of rain have continued to pound central Hunan and the eastern part of Jiangxi province. Emergency teams have already been dispatched by the by the National Commission for Disaster Reduction. The Ministry of Civil Affairs also sent emergency response teams to the affected regions.

The local civil affairs in Jiangxi reported five people killed in eight cities and 43 counties on Saturday morning. The heavy rainstorms have been pouring in the province since Wednesday. The report went on saying that 123,000 people have already been evacuated and around 789,000 were affected by the massive downpour.

The economic losses in Jiangxi province have already amounted to US$84.85 million. About 4,000 houses were reported to have collapsed or have been substantially damaged. A total of 63,100 hectares of crops was also reported to have been destroyed.

Hunan’s civil affairs bureau reported that the heavy rain left seven people dead while four are still missing. The bureau also said that the heavy downpour affected 10 cities and 47 counties across the province.

The report went on saying that around 2.08 million people were affected in Hunan while 171,000 have already been relocated. There were 9,700 houses severely damaged while 122,700 hectares of crops were reported to have been affected. Hunan province reported a direct economic loss of roughly about CNY1.57 billion (US$252 million)

Relief goods such as blankets, food and tents were already dispatched to the areas affected by the heavy rainstorms.
