Hawaii-born Michelle Wie wins the U.S. Women's Open with a two-stroke advantage against closest competitor, fellow American Stacy Lewis at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club Course No. 2 in North Carolina.

"I'm so unbelievable happy," 24-year-old Wie said to reporters. "I'm so happy to have my name on the trophy, just so grateful for everything."

On the 16th hole, Wie took a penalty stroke after hitting the ball in a thick clump of wire grass. She double bogeyed that hole. She eventually shot a 25-foot birdie on the 17th hole and sealed her victory on the last hole. Winning by two-strokes against World No. 1 ranked Lewis who finished at even-par 280.

"I definitely gave myself a heart attack when I couldn't find the ball," said Wie. "I was stressing out for sure. I also left myself a hefty double bogey putt. All you can do at that point is laugh. I joked with my caddie we really like to make things difficult for ourselves."

Irish Stephanie Meadow just turned professional a week ago, finished her first major with an impressive third place with 1-over 280.

Korea's Amy Yang was tied for place with Wie coming in the final round but shot 4-over 74 and finished the tournament in fourth place with 2-over 282.

Talking of Wie's career in golf, she said: "I think there was a big stretch of time where I was injured. My health was not very good. And I worked hard. I never stopped working hard. And no matter how hard I worked, there was a point where I just wasn't getting any better. But David [Leadbetter, Wie's instructor] talked to me and he said, 'You know, sometimes hard work shows overnight and sometimes it shows over a couple of years.' And, obviously, I think I was on the couple of years track. Being impatient, I just wanted to see it overnight."
