The Interview's Digital Release Grosses US$40 Million

The Interview still remains as the highest-grossing movie released digitally. The controversial film grossed US$40 million so far.

Sony Pictures Entertainment claimed that the film, which centers on two journalists' successful attempt to assassinate a North Korea leader, earned US$31 million in digital sales two weeks after its release.

"We always said that we would get the movie to the greatest audience possible," Michael Lynton, Sony Pictures CEO said.

He went on saying that earning US$40 million from mere digital release is already "a significant milestone."

Sony's statement came a few days after National Association of Theatre Owners issued another statement projecting that the movie is set to lose around US$30 million because of the studio's decision to release it in VOD.

The Interview debuted on limited theater release and on demand on a variety of platforms on Dec. 24. The Seth Rogen and James Franco starrer earned only a disappointing US$6 million from ticket sales, although it could have done better if the film was given a wider release.

The studio initially decided to cancel the film's premier after major theater chains declined refused to show it following Sony hackers' threat of terrorist attacks akin to that of Sept. 11, 2001's.

The studio, nevertheless, announced that the film is to be given limited theatrical release following President Obama's statement that criticized the studio's decision.
