World No. 2 Chinese Li Na got an early scare from Polish qualifier Paula Kania but eventually winning the match in her first round at the grass courts of Wimbledon 2014.

32-year-old Li, who achieved her second Grand Slam title in the Australian Open early this year, came off to a shaky start as 21-year-old Kania stretched her to a 7-5 win on the first set. But all went Li's way as she warmed off and screeched past Kania on the second 6-2.

Last year's Wimbledon champion Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli announced her retirement in August after complaining of soreness in her achilles, shoulder, hips and lower back during her match against Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova at the Roger's Cup in Montreal, Canada.

29-year-old Bartoli will be watching center court Tuesday at the Royal Box where German Sabine Lisicki, the woman she defeated in the finals, will be playing against Julia Glushko of Israel.

In an interview Sunday, Bartoli answered questions if her return to Wimbledon would spark a comeback. She replies: "Look at my shoulder. Literally, I can't even lift my arm every morning. It was the same last year, and didn't improve a year after, even without playing much tennis. So definitely no regrets at all."

Other Chinese nationals who have hopes of capturing the crown are Peng Shuai and Hsieh Su-wei. Peng defeated UK's Johanna Konta in three sets, 6-4 3-6 6-4, and will also advance to the second round while Hsieh loses her chances after being crushed by Czech Tereza Smitkova in two straight sets 3-6 3-6.

Peng and Hsieh Su-wei are the defending ladies doubles champions at Wimbledon and will see action Thursday.

2011 Wimbledon champion and sixth seed Czech Petra Kvitova also saw action Monday as she cruises by fellow Czech Andrea Hlavackova 6-3 6-0.

French Open winner Maria Sharapova, World No. 1 Serena Williams and Canadian star Eugenie Bouchard will all see action Tuesday
