CBS Casts "Glee" Star Melissa Benoist To Play "Supergirl"

CBS has finally found to right girl to give life to "Supergirl" on the small screen.

The network has decided to give the role to Glee actress Melissa Benoist, who would play the role of Kara Zor-El in the TV adaptation of the classic comic-book series.

Benoist gained fame for portraying Marley Rose in seasons four and five of Fox's Glee. She also starred in the 2014 indie flick Whiplash.

According to CBS, Supergirl was revealed to be Superman's cousin and just like him, was born on the planet Krypton but managed to escape when the planet was on the verge of destruction. She has been concealing her identity on Earth until she decides to embrace her true identity.

This is the first time in 25 years that CBS would be showing a superhero TV series. The last was 1990's short-lived The Flash.

CBS entertainment chairman Nina Tassler teased that the series, to be produced by Warner Bros., would feature Supergirl as a crime solver, just like the lead characters in Good Wife and Madam Secretary.

"She's a crime solver, so she's going to have to solve a crime. She's going to get a bad guy," Tassler revealed.

Likewise, Supergirl was described as "a very strong, independent young woman. She's coming into her own."

Just like ordinary human being, the series also tackles Supergirl's struggles on family and work issues.

Over-all, the series is "a female empowerment story," according to Tassler.

"If you look at the strong female characters we have on the air, it really is resonant of that ..."

Helen Slater was the first actress to give life to Supergirl in the 1984 eponymous film. Laura Vandervoort also played the role on The CW's Smallville.
