Top-seeded American Serena Williams went on center court and played against fellow countrymen Anna Tatishvili. The five-time Wimbledon champion hammered her way to victory with 16 service aces finishing the match in two straight sets at 6-1 6-2.

"The last time I played her, she ended really strong," Serena said after the match. "Today, she started where she left off last time. She can hit the ball really, really hard."

"I fell so many times during the match, which was weird but it was probably just a case of getting my bearings. I didn't play much grass-court tennis last year. I think I'll be OK," Serena added.

Third seed Romanian Simona Halep made her match against Brazil's Teliana Pereira look effortless as she hit her way to a 6-2 6-2 victory.

"It was a perfect start," Halep said. "First round, always it's difficult, but today I played really well. The court was beautiful, so I was enjoying every moment."

Halep will not encounter a high seeded match up until the fourth round. She faces 170th seed Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko on the second round.

"It's tough to say now because, yeah, I have better draw because I'm seeded now and it's normal," Halep said.  "So I'm very focused. I want to give everything I can on court and to try to play my best. I want to play many matches here, I want to win every match and every tournament, but it's not easy. I will try to give everything on court and to do my best always. I have a goal every day, and I want to fight for it."

Fifth seed Russian Maria Sharapova played on No. 1 court against British Samantha Murray. Sharapova made quick work of her match as the reigning French Open champion powered her way in two straight sets 6-1 6-0.

"There's always a bit more tension coming into the first round of a Grand Slam," Sharapova said. "It was such a quick turnaround. Just a couple weeks ago you're on the clay, coming onto the grass, with the new grass and new surface, it's a different feeling. It was obviously a bit slower start than I wanted, but I'm happy overall with how I progressed through the match."

Other notables that won their match are last year's runner-up and 19th seed German Sabine Lisicki, 13th seed Canadian Eugenie Bouchard.
