Wilcher and her family was asked to leave a KFC restraurant in Mississippi because her scars were bothering other customers.

On Tuesday, Laurel Leader-Call published a report saying the story, which the girl's grandmother had first posted on Facebook, was just a hoax. The report went on to say that it was just a scheme to collect over $135,000 in cash, gifts, and free surgeries, Yahoo! News relayed.

Kelly Mullins, the grandmother, recounted that she was driving home from the hospital with Victoria when they decided to drop by at a KFC branch in Jackson, Mississippi, to buy sweet tea and mashed potatoes. However, they were asked to leave because the child's face was "disrupting" the diners, WAPT-TV said.

According to unnamed sources familiar with the ongoing investigation, Mullins and her granddaughter were not spotted in the restaurant's surveillance video on the day the incident allegedly occurred. The sources also said the branch's records did not reflect any orders of mashed potatoes and sweet tea in a single transaction.

KFC spokesperson Rick Maynard said the company has taken the report seriously but they were unable to verify the story during their internal investigation. So, they sought the services of a "third-party consultant" for an independent investigation which is expected to be completed soon.

Maynard added that KFC has committed to donate $30,000 for Victoria's medical bills regardless of the outcome of the investigation.

A Facebook page had been created in April to update the public on Victoria's condition and progress. On Tuesday, Victoria's aunt Teri Rials Bates posted a statement on the page insisting that the story was not a hoax and that they are still waiting for KFC to release a statement when the investigation is completed.

Bates added that the child's family "has not asked for anything" and has even forgone their other needs just to provide for the toddler. As of now, the Facebook page seems to have been taken down.

After Mullins wrote about the incident on the social networking site, KFC had apologized before starting the internal investigation. The company also asked the family to provide them with details to aid the investigation.

Three pit bulls had reportedly attacked the toddler in her grandfather Donald Mullins' backyard. Investigators said the latter had shot two of the dogs dead and the third was euthanized.

Meanwhile, the grandfather and his girlfriend have been arrested and charged with child endangerment. Simspon County Sheriff Kenneth Lewis said Donald Mullins had 10 pit bulls at home at the time his granddaughter was attacked.
