Could the Milky Way be a Giant Wormhole?

Both scientific research and science fiction have spoken of wormholes as gateways to other places. A new theory, however, posits our galaxy could be a wormhole itself.

Latest evidence collected and new theories point to the possibility that our galaxy could be a wormhole. If the theory is proved true, that would mean that it's stable and navigable.

This is the hypothesis put forward in a study published in the Annals of Physics. The study was conducted with the participation of the International School for Advance Studies (SISSA) in Trieste, Italy but a collaboration of Indian, Italian, and North American researchers brought the study together.

The study made scientists take a look at dark matter much more closely.

Paolo Salucci, an astrophysicist from SISSA, says that if the map of dark matter in the Milky Way were combined with the most recent Big Bang model, and taking into account the hypothetical existence of space-time tunnels, then it's possible our universe contains one such tunnel.

It also means the tunnel could be as big as our galaxy. In fact, it really could be our galaxy.

While the theory is an interesting one, it remains just that -- a theory. The fact is that it is a possibility. It can be tested, Salucci says.

The conclusion the astrophysicists reached stemmed from the combination of the dark matter map distribution in the Milky Way with equations of general relativity.

For years, scientists have tried to deduce what dark matter really is. They hooked their hypotheses regarding dark matter on a particle called the neutralino.

In particle physics, the neutralino is a hypothetical particle predicted by supersymmetry. To date, however, the particle has not yet been observed at CERN or in the universe.
