Sarah Palin’s Freedom Summit Speech Further Dooms Presidential Ambition

Former GOP Alaska Governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin started 2015 on a wrong foot with her infamous "stepping stone" post on Facebook containing her New Year's message.

As January ends, she appears to continue her missteps like her Saturday speech at the Iowa Freedom Summit in Des Moines, which pundits said just killed her presidential ambition for 2016.

Washington Post describes her talk as "odd, rambling speech" that went on for 34 and a half minutes as "roller coaster rides of clichés, non sequiturs and warmed-over grievances."

Byron York of the Washington Examiner described her talk as quite petty and long and incoherent. Charles C.W. Cooke of the National Review wrote that it was slow and "unseemly descent into farce."

Their criticism of Palin's speech is in stark contrast to when she dazzled listeners at the 2008 GOP National Convention, which National Review editor Rich Lowry found to be so sparkling to the point of being almost mesmerizing.

Some commentators, such as Matt Lewis of Daily Beast, admit being part of the "premature deification" of Palin, which he now regrets.

But for Washington Post op-ed columnist Kathleen Parker, the Republicans share the blame, describing the former governor's political ascent and equally fast descent as a tragedy.

Fox News Channel host Sean Hannity asked Palin on Tuesday night if her rambling speech was the result of Teleprompter malfunction, to which Palin replied that she is used to Teleprompters not working like what happened to her in 2008 during a convention talk.

But she blamed the negative talk about her Saturday speech to media's "herd mentality."

Prior to Hannity's show, Palin's guesting was promoted on Fox and The O'Reilly Factor host Bill O'Reilly made fun of Palin, noting her devaluation from being half-term Alaska governor to her disastrous vice presidential bid to reality TV host and now as "media whore."

Her response to O'Reilly's teasing was an equally vague reply:

"Knowing what the media is going to do, it's going to take more than a village to beat Hillary (Clinton). There needs to be unity, understanding that conservatives have that strike against us right off the bat - that being the media."

She added that the U.S. deserves the best and it deserves competition from the GOP who can take Hillary or whoever is the Democratic candidate, and "win for this country."

Many political observers, though, believe Palin isn't that person.
