American Astronauts on the ISS Go Bald After Losing World Cup Bet

Our hats, or is it, hair, are off to the two American astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) who had their heads shaved after the U.S. lost 0-1 to Germany at the ongoing World Cup in Brazil.

The heroic Americans, Reid Wiseman and Steven Swanson, made a video of their hair being shaved-off by German astronaut Alexander Gerst.

The Americans made the bet with Gerst. If the Americans had won, they probably would have wanted to shave Gerst's hair. There's only one problem: Gerst is already bald.

So, the Americans settled for drawing a U.S. flag on Gerst's bald pate if their team had gotten past Germany. That didn't happen since Germany won their match on June 26.

What is surprising in the video is that Gerst didn't use an ordinary electric or battery powered shaver to do the deed. What the German did use is a huge machine that looks a lot like a portable car vacuum cleaner.

It probably took a long time and lot of effort for Gerst to finish his barbering, much to the delight of the three Russian cosmonauts also on the ISS. The time lapse video shows some pretty funny stuff that looks very un-astronaut like.

Kudos to the Americans for being men of their word.

Now that the U.S. is in the Round of 16, it's a safe bet that Wiseman, Swanson and Gerst and Russian cosmonauts Aleksandr Skvortsov, Oleg Artemyev and Maksim Surayev will likely bet on other World Cup outcomes.

Skvortsov and Artemyev look like they're already losing their hair. Surayev is the only astronaut with a full head of hair on the ISS.

Looks like the three non-Russians won't be able to do much head shaving if the Russians lose a World Cup bet.
