Additionally, Silva's laboratory report also showed that he tested positive for a second steroid, androstane.
But why were they allowed to fight at UFC 183?
NSAC chairman Francisco Aguilar, who confirmed the results of the tests of Silva and Diaz, clarified that the result of the prefight test were not available until Tuesday morning. The fight took place Saturday night.
Aguilar said Silva underwent blood and urine test on January 9, 19, and 31. Result of the January 19 test is currently unavailable.
Both Silva and Diaz face potential fine and suspension.
Sources said the two UFC fighters could be temporarily suspended when NSAC meets on February 17.
Both Diaz and Silva failed to comment on the issue but UFC has released a statement.
"On Feb. 3, 2015, the UFC organization was notified by the NSAC that Anderson Silva tested positive for drostanolone metabolites on his Jan. 9 out of competition drug test," the UFC said in a statement.
The UFC said NSAC will conduct further testing to confirm the preliminary results.
"UFC is disappointed to learn of these initial results," the fight promoter said.
UFC 183 marked Silva's return to the octagon since he suffered a broken leg during a TKO loss to Chris Weidman at UFC 168 in December 2013.
All three judges scored the fight inside MGM Grand Garden Arena for the returning Silva: 50-45, 50-45 and 49-46.
