LinkedIn has increased its user base in China from four million to eight million, according to its earnings report released Thursday.

This doubled size in user base proves that despite the government's strict censorship, foreign social networking sites still stand a chance in China.

The business-oriented social networking service officially entered China in February 2014 with the launch of Lingying, its Chinese language site. By then, it already had about four million members in its English language site.

"Our presence in China also helps us achieve our vision of extending the company's professional network into the world's first economic graph," wrote CEO Jeff Weiner.

Many internet companies based in the U.S. had tried but failed to make huge success in the world's largest marketplace.

LinkedIn's good start may be attributed to its strategy in entering China. What makes it different from others is the company began as a local startup.

While big social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are blocked by Chinese government, LinkedIn had agreed to operate according to censorship rules.

These rules will require the site to delete user posts and shut down accounts that may be related to anti-government content.

Weiner wrote that LinkedIn supports freedom of expression and disagrees with censorship, but after weighing options in China, the company had decided to proceed with the expansion.

Linked had already launched about 20 international sites including Japanese, Korean, Indonesian and Tagalog. This year's earnings report revealed that 40 percent of the last quarter's total revenue was gained from international markets.
