Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan Give US$75 Million to San Francisco General Hospital

Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan have generously donated US$75 million to San Francisco General Hospital, better known as The General among locals.

Not only is their donation a considerable gift, but it is also a personal one, as Dr. Priscilla Chan worked for a few years at the hospital during her pediatric residency.

Priscilla is now working at the USCF Benioff Children's Hospital but she wanted to give back to the hospital she once worked at because, "Day in and day out, I witness the compassion and dedication of my colleagues as they work tirelessly to deliver the best available care to all of our patients. Mark and I are proud to support such an important public hospital," she shared.

The General is San Francisco's only trauma center and have become a "safety net" for many people since they willingly treat patients who are uninsured and underinsured.

The Facebook founder and his wife's donation cannot come at a more perfect time. The General is currently planning to make improvements including a new trauma center and a nine-story, 453,000-square foot main hospital, which are both scheduled to open in December of this year.

In regards to their donation, Mark said, "our contribution ... will allow The General to double the size of its new Emergency Room and quadruple the number of beds, and provide state of the art equipment for healthcare providers and first responders," he continued, "we are so fortunate that our work in connecting the world through Facebook has given us the ability to give back to our local community, our country and the world - and to work to improve education, health care and internet access for everyone."

Mark and Priscilla have been known to give sizeable contributions to various charities and organizations and the San Francisco General Hospital is just the latest beneficiary of the couple's generosity.

Mark further revealed, "To serve our community in San Francisco, we can think of no better place to focus than The General."
