(Photo : Kickstarter) The most backed Kickstarter in history has finished with $8.7 million raised.

Elan Lee and Shane Small created a card game called "Exploding Kittens," Needing money, they launched a Kickstarter campaign for the game, The Hoops News reported.

Fortunately, the response was overwhelming and "Exploding Kittens" made Kickstarter history.

In just a couple of days, Lee and Small collected around US$5.7 million for the development of their card game. Around 143,873 people made contributions and as of this writing, contributions are still pouring in.

To know how this card game is played, watch it on YouTube. Based on the video, the card game is fairly complicated to say the least.  Matthew Inman is the illustrator of the "Exploding Kittens" cards.

A Kickstarter contributor that donates $20 or more will receive a deck of the "Exploding Kittens." At first, the creators were hoping to sell a thousand card decks at most. The large number of donors will prove a challenge for the card game makers to fill out all the orders.

Their success at getting a huge contribution at Kickstarter bodes well for the "Exploding Kittens" card game. "We feel indebted to the community", Lee said.

The money they received virtually guarantees their company has more than enough funds to develop the game.  Lee hasn't yet announced any plans as to what his company will do with the excess funds.

The Kickstarter way of crowdsourcing funds is an unusual way of obtaining funds for putting business plans into action.  For card game makers like "Exploding Kittens," the Kickstarter way is a very successful, if not the best way to source for funds.

It's safe to assume that conventional business models and ideas are now being turned upside down.

The "Exploding Kittens" card game has certainly built a large user base that will probably grow as the creators further develop the game.
