The New York City (NYC) Police are baffled at the 12 days they have experienced without any homicide cases.

The dozen days is the longest peaceful streak in the city since 1990.

Eric Roman was shot in the head when he was walking home from the gym. He died of his wounds a day later. The crime was recorded last Friday, the killing though was officially recorded on Saturday.

If it were a usual day, the killing of Roman would have sunk into the sea of homicide cases the police already have. However, his case takes center spotlight, as it is the only homicide case the police force has recorded in 12 days.

Roman's murder ended the 12 day homicide-less in NYC.

Toward the end of last week, Commissioner William J. Bratton and other officials were excited about the absence of killings in the city.

In a television interview set last Friday, Bratton said he didn't want to jinx the streak. People were even beginning to imagine a month without any killings, but soon shrugged it off as impossible.

Criminologists correlate the drop in the murder rate with the temperature. They say that there is always a tendency for violence to drop during the winter.

The last streak the city had, lasting as long as 10 days, also took place during February when the temperatures were down.

With the temperature expected to be at an all-time low on Monday, the streak could have extended for several more days if it were not for Roman's killing and another homicide in Queens.

One thing is for certain though; it is that the 12-day streak helped to pump the breaks in the rapidly increasing number of shootings in the city.

Through Saturday, a total of 136 have been shot in 117 shootings, while the previous year only saw 110 wounded in 100 shootings.

Without the streak, the trend could have been much higher.
