Mercedes-Benz will recall a total of 127,071 cars in China beginning 13 March due to a fire risk, China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) announced.

The German luxury car maker will recall CLS-Class and E-Class cars imported to China and E-Class cars manufactured in China by the Beijing Benz Automotive Co, Mercedes Benz's joint venture in the country.

The statement issued by AQSIQ said that the recall was ordered after a sealing strip for the engine cabin of the said cars was found coming loose.

The defect could lead to an engine fire, especially if the sealing strip gets in contact with hot engine parts.

The cars that will be recalled by Mercedes Benz were those manufactured between 2012 and 2014.

Mercedes-Benz China said it will check and replace the defective parts at no cost to the owners of the vehicles.

AQSIQ will also recall 705 G-Class luxury sport utility vehicles starting 9 March due to a steering problem.

Last week, AQSIQ announced that Shanghai General Motors has decided to recall 22,508 2015 Chevrolet Cruze cars due to defective vacuum boosters.

The recall involves vehicles manufactured from April 16, 2014 to Dec. 12, 2014, said AQSIQ.

Long-time use of the boosters could result in cracks on the shell and pose potential safety hazards, the watchdog said.

Shanghai General Motors has offered to replace the defective parts free of charge.

In December, a problem in the brake pipe has triggered the recall of 2,877 Jaguar XJ cars in China.

The recall was filed by Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Trading (Shanghai) Co after it found out that the brake pipe in the affected cars may have been improperly installed.

The defect could lead to loss of braking force, the AQSIQ said. The recall affects Jaguar XJ cars manufactured between 06 February 2012 and 23 July 2014.

China, the world's largest automobile market, has been strictly checking the quality of vehicles sold in the country to protect the consumers.

Last year alone, major car manufacturers recalled up to a million cars sold in China for various defects, including faulty brakes, faulty air bags, defective seats, and several others.
