Statin Pills May Cut Breast Cancer Risk among Women

Daily statin pills could reduce the risk of having breast cancer among women, UK recent studies show.

Scientists unearthed a link between having high cholesterol levels and catching the disease which kills thousands of women every year in the United Kingdom.

This means that the inexpensive pills could become a powerful tool in treating the most common cancer among women.

In Spain, Aston University's Dr. Rahul Potluri presented in Barcelona his team's analysis of over one million patients in the UK between the year 2000 and 2013.

Findings of the study include a direct connection among women's high cholesterol to a greater chance of them developing breast cancer, which was found to be at a 164 percent higher risk of contracting the disease.

However, previous studies reported in 2013 that short-term use of statin pills have protective effects against breast-cancer but may damage certain chemical pathways that may lead to the growth of tumors if taken for a longer period.

Jessica Harris of Cancer Research UK stated that despite the huge number of research done about the topic, there has been no conclusive answer if the pills have an effect in battling breast cancer since some found no link, others state an increased risk while more studies found it can reduce the risk.

On the other hand, Dr. Potluri clarified that they only conducted "an observational study so we can't conclude that high cholesterol causes breast cancer but the strength of this association warrants further investigation."
