Lou Reed on The Beatles: “I Thought They Were Garbage.”

PBS Digital Studios just unearthed an old interview for their Blank on Blank series, where Velvet Underground's Lou Reed trashed The Beatles and The Doors.

The 1987 interview, which was released just two days ago, features a cranky and impatient animated Lou Reed, who seemingly said nothing good about fellow musicians. He not only put down The Doors and The Beatles, but also every other musician in the world.

In the interview with Joe Smith, the then 45-year old Reed explained that he wanted Velvet Underground to "elevate" and promote rock songs to a higher ground, which most fans will agree that he did.

He bluntly shared what he thought of other musicians during their time and said that he thought they were way ahead of them and could not compare to what they do. Referring to the level they were on compared to everyone else, he pointed out that they were "not up to his kneecap or even "up to his ankles."

He went on to say that other bands were excruciatingly pretentious and stupid, saying that trying to use quotes was way "worse than stupid rock and roll," and called out The Doors by adding,  "What I mean by stupid, I mean the Doors."

When the interviewer asked him about John Lennon and his band, The Beatles, he didn't think twice about expressing his dislike for the group. Aside from openly saying that he didn't like one of the greatest and most influential bands of their era, he also thought that "they were garbage."

Not that The Doors, The Beatles or any other musician should be upset because Reed revealed that he didn't like anybody.
