President Barack Obama does not love America and was not brought up the way Americans were brought up, said former New York City Mayor Rudolf Giuliani.

At a dinner at Manhattan's 21 Club Wednesday, Giuliani said he does not believe that the US president loves America at all.

"I do not believe, and I know this is a horrible thing to say, but I do not believe that the president loves America," he said.

"He doesn't love you. And he doesn't love me. He wasn't brought up the way you were brought up and I was brought up through love of this country," Giulliani was quoted as saying

His comments were made while Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who is considering a 2016 bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

Giuliani also sought the Republican presidential nomination briefly in 2008.

"What country has left so many young men and women dead abroad to save other countries without taking land?" Giuliani said.

"This is not the colonial empire that somehow he has in his hand. I've never felt that from him," he continued.

The former New York City mayor said he felt loved from every American president, including George Bush and Bill Clinton.

"I don't feel that from President Obama," he said.

Interviewed on Fox Thursday morning, Giuliani clarified that his statement at the Manhattan 21 Club did not question Obama's patriotism but simply noted how the current president criticizes America more than his predecessors.

"What I'm saying is that, in his rhetoric, I very rarely hear him say the things that I used to hear Ronald Reagan say, the things I used to hear Bill Clinton say about how much he loves America," he said. "I do hear him criticize America much more often than other American presidents."
