Google Says No to Porn Ads

Google has added a new policy that will ban the promotion of porn sites on its ad network.

The policy affects websites that use explicit graphics in advertisements posted on Google's ad network. These graphics include sexual acts of masturbation and oral sex.

The policy change was announced by Google last March but it was only on July 7 that Google put it into practice officially.

Google's ad network, popularly known as AdWords, allows assorted websites and blogs to promote themselves. AdWords is also Google's major source of revenue.

Google reportedly generated $13.8 billion through AdWords in the recent quarter. This total accounts for over 90 percent of company's total revenue.

A Google spokesperson did not answer when asked to reveal the percentage of sexual-explicit websites that promote through AdWords. However, the spokesperson stated that the company updates its policies regularly, and has strict guidelines for sexually explicit content.

The reason behind Google's big decision is unclear for now. It is worth noting that a few years ago, Google took a similar step when it started banning Blogger-based blogs that were making money through porn ads.

The step taken by Google might not affect its revenue generation that much. This because Google continues to invest in other kinds of ad programs such as online video advertising.

It is worth noting that last month, the tech giant announced its intent to acquire video advertising giant mDialog.

"I was one of the very first advertisers for AdWords back in 2002," said Theo Sapoutzis, chairman and CEO of AVN Media Network. "It's something that's been [untouched] for 12 years, so you don't expect change is going to start happening."
