E.L. James’ Demands Delay Talks About “50 Shades of Grey” Sequel

50 Shades of Grey is no doubt a box-office success, which is why a sequel to the controversial film would seem to be an exceptional proposition.

However, fans of the novel and the movie would have to continue to wait for an announcement regarding the adaptation of the second book in the series-a wait that is reportedly giving the stars of the film, Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dorman a difficult time-who have signed on to do the next films-to book other roles because of the uncertainty of the sequel's schedule.

According to Variety, the delay is because of James' persistent decision to write the next screenplay herself. Universal Pictures, who has rights to the trilogy was reportedly initially "resistant to the idea" but is currently under a discussion with the British author, who has never had any experience writing a script before.

The script for the first book in the series was written by Kelly Marcel and directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson. Both the writer and the director are reportedly not on-board for the sequel. Both women have shared the difficulties of working with James, who possibly was going overboard during the making of the film, thanks to the unusual control granted to her by Universal.

Taylor-Johnson has revealed that she and James clashed a lot. In an interview with Variety, the director said that while she was trying to generate a film experience that would "honor the book" and "at the same time give us a fresh perspective," it was proving to be difficult for James. Adding that they battled every scenario out.

As for Marcel, the writer and James were initially getting along well up to the point when the studio asked the film's sexual content to be toned down, which did not sit well with James. This past month, Marcel has not been seen at any publicity or press event for the movie and The Sun claims that she just quit.

A spokesman for Universal has told Variety that they, "had always intended to sit down with the author after the film opened and discuss next steps, and that has not yet happened."
